Frequently Asked Questions

  • At Herts and Home Childcare we are starting a movement to modernise the nanny industry and ensure nannies receive the professional status they deserve. The shift towards hybrid working, accelerated by the covid pandemic, has amplified the demand for reliable, high-quality childcare. We're committed to meeting this need by recruiting only the most professional and high-calibre nannies who love what they do. Furthermore, we want to offer benefits that do not exist in the usual nanny parent-employer set up as well as ensuring fair compensation for nannies’ expertise and dedication.

  • No. There is no charge to join our agency as an employed nanny nor as a contracted nanny.

We do however, require you to hold an up to date DBS (ideally on the update service) and a current 12 hour paediatric first aid certificate. If these need renewing at registration, these will need to be covered at your own cost.

  • We take effective communication seriously and strive to keep our candidates and employees updated on their status. If you ever find yourself waiting for an update or dissatisfied with the level of communication, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're always happy to clarify and ensure you're well-informed.

  • If you are on our database ‘seeking work’ be sure to check our job vacancies regularly as well as texts and emails from us with current positions. Contact us via phone , email, text or watsap to discuss being put forward for a role.

For nannies registered under our employment we will phone, text and email assignments for you based on your agreed availability and requirements.

If you are not yet registered with us and would like to be put forward for a role please fill in our application form and email us your CV to office@hertsandhomechildcare.co.uk along with the reference code of the job you are interested in.

  • As a nanny, maintaining a professional and appropriate appearance is essential. Given that the role often involves activities like bending down or sitting on the floor with children, your attire should be comfortable yet suitable for work.

For interviews, it's crucial to dress smartly, avoiding any clothing that may be too revealing or distract potential employers. Large logos, heavy branding or overly personalized styles are not appropriate, opt instead for classic simple choices.

In your day-to-day role with Herts and Home, bare in mind that you are a representative of our agency. Your attire should be understated, without prominent branding, and appropriate for the age of the children you are caring for and the activities you'll be engaging in. Common choices among our nannies include jeggings or leggings paired with long shirts or jumpers. In warmer weather, dresses are acceptable as long as appropriate undergarments like cycling shorts are worn beneath them.

  • For safety and legal reasons ratios are 6:1, meaning that one nanny can care for a maximum of six children at any time. If a client has an extensive family or many children at an event they will need multiple nannies to ensure everyone is safe and legal.

  • For permanent nanny care it is usual for a full-time nanny to work between 45-60 hours weekly. A part-time nanny can work anywhere from 10-40 hours per week.

For ad-hoc and babysitting nannies we only allow bookings for a minimum of 4 hours and we allow up to a 12 hour booking unless the booking is for proxy care (sole charge over-night care) and sleeping provisions are provided.

  • A nanny's primary role is to focus on childcare responsibilities, which include tasks like bathing, dressing, and cooking nutritious meals for the children. Alongside this, the nanny will manage the children's wardrobe, ensuring their clothes are washed, ironed, and organized. Toy cleanliness and safety are also a priority; at the end of each day, the play area will be neat and orderly.

Our nannies go beyond basic care; they actively enrich the children's lives through social and developmental activities. This could mean arranging playdates, attending classes, or outings to enriching environments like parks, libraries, or swimming pools. Utilising their expertise in childcare, nannies also engage children in developmental play, offering a range of activities from creative arts and crafts to singing and reading to promote learning and growth.

Some families may request additional tasks such as grocery shopping, family meals, family laundry and ironing as well as pet care. Accepting these tasks may help a nanny stand out to a family but are not necessary for them to register with us. We do not take on housekeeping positions and clearly define the role of a nanny to clients to ensure they do not expect cleaning or other non-child duties.

  • If you encounter any challenges or conflicts with your family, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We offer HR support aimed at resolving any issues and maintaining a successful placement. If it becomes clear that the match is no longer suitable, inform us as soon as you can. Depending on your contract point, a paid notice period may be required. We can begin helping you to search for a new role or register you to the employed position side of the agency while you find a placement.

*If you complete your 6-month probation successfully, you'll be eligible for our 6-month employment guarantee. You'll shift to our Membership Employment service, working for various families until you secure another permanent role. Formal notice periods apply if you find work outside the agency.

** Eligibility for the 6-month employment guarantee is subject to successful completion of the probation period and agency demand. This guarantee is subject to agency demand and satisfactory performance- you can opt out at any time during your permanent placement.
